The difference between Prosecco and Prosecco Superiore

Do you know the difference between Prosecco and Prosecco Superiore? Prosecco is not just “Italian sparkling wine” it’s a designation for sparkling wine. Prosecco is a fresh and fruity sparkling wine made predominately with the Glera grape, and is produced using tank method as opposed to barrel. This means that the wine receives no oak influence, and is a true, straight-forward representation of the grapes from this region.

Wines classified as Prosecco Superiore showcase a sense of place, and this classification represents assured quality standards from vineyard to winery. Look for DOCG on the label to know you are buying the best from this region, and to find the highest quality of this designation, look for Conegliano Valdobiaddene Prosecco Superiore DOCG.

The Beauty of a Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Vineyard

On July 7th , 2019, the Prosecco Hills of Conegliano Valdobbiadene were proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These special vineyards of ancient soils sit at high altitudes of up to 1640ft above sea level between the sea and the foothills of the Alps. Optimum grape growing happens here due to their unique qualities of the vineyards to produce high-quality wines. Thanks to their steep, south-facing slopes, vines obtain maximum sunlight and receive substantial amount of rain for the grapes but maintain proper soil drainage. The breeze the vines receive at this altitude also helps keep soils dry. The aspect of vineyards has led to “heroic viticulture” for the grape farmers. While 150 hours of manpower is needed for one hectare of land per year on the plains, an astonishing 600 hours of manual work is needed in the vineyards of these wonderous hills! Because of this, most properties are quite small, and family run. Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore wines are a true testament to their sense of place, reflecting the monumental beauty of these vineyards in the glass.

Val D’Oca Prosecco CV & Sustainability

The Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco D.O.C.G. Denomination launched the S.Q.N.P.I. (Sistema Qualità Nazionale Produzione Integrata) Certification in 2019 for the wine growers of the region. This certification system encompasses all the methods used in the production and defense of crops and aims to reduce the use of synthetic chemical substances down to a minimum in the vineyards. This certification also regulates fertilization practices. Several wineries quickly achieved certification, and a total of 10% of the grape growers fall under the umbrella of this accolade. The goal of Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco is to have all the Denomination certified by 2029.
