Winery Focus: Beronia

Wine writer Leah Spooner stands behind three Beronia wines sipping a glass of wine

The time enjoyed together is the real time lived. Let’s live and enjoy more!

This quote is found on the back label of all Beronia wines. While it’s not uncommon for wineries to put quotes on their labels, and maybe some even being a little too gimmicky, I was especially drawn to this one and feel that it really hits the nail on the head, in particular when pertaining to wine experiences.

Beronia is a winery that that was established in 1973 that focuses on the wines in the heart of Rioja, Spain. While this is their flagship location, they also have a second winery based in Rueda that only produces Verdejo. They are headstrong on using sustainable practices and techniques within their vineyards and wineries, and have the accolades to prove it. Beronia was awarded the first winery in Europe to be certified by LEEDS (Leader in Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Design), and they also have been certified by WfCP (Wineries for Climate Protection). The winery in La Rioja is remarkable and a sight in itself as it was built halfway underground for geo-thermal temperature control, is covered with a plant rooftop, and even blends in to the hilly landscape that surrounds it.

Below are three reds they have produced from the Beronia La Rioja location.

Wine expert Leah Spooner holds a bottle of Beronia Tempranillo Rioja

A complex, yet easy-drinking wine that is 100% Tempranillo and fermented in stainless steel tanks. It exudes a plethora of aromas including spice, dried berries, blackberry, blueberry, smoke, and dried fig. The palate is soft, with a notable presence of velvety tannins. Appetizing, juicy acidity embraces notes of dark cherry, wild raspberry, rosemary and thyme. It wraps up with a fine, black pepper finish. -$14.45

Wine writer Leah Spooner holds a bottle of Beronia Especial wine

100% Tempranillo that is crafted with select grapes. The Tempranillo sees 9 months of lees aging, developing flavour and character in this full-bodied wine.

Savoury aromas of hickory, ripe cherry, vanilla, and smoked, cured meat. These notes are reflected on the palate alongside winterberry, garrigue, olive, coffee, and tobacco. Wonderful complexity, smooth tannins, and balanced acidity. Long finish. -$17.45

Wine writer Leah Spooner holds a bottle of LCBO Vintages Essential Beronia Reserva Rioja wine bottle

This Reserva is comprised of 94% Tempranillo, 3% Mazuelo, and 3% Graciano. It ages for 20 months in American and French oak barrels, and another 18 months in bottle prior to release. Full-bodied and compacted with intense flavour on the nose and palate. Aromas of new oak, vanilla, and clove on the forefront of the nose, with subtle cherry notes. Dried, tart red fruit down the core of the palate, with prevalent oak framework and sturdy tannins that are both nicely integrated. Tobacco and dried herbs add more depth on long, persistent finish. -$21.95
