Malbec World Day: Argentina’s Signature Varietal

SanJuanVineyard.png

On April 17th I’ll be toasting to #WorldMalbecDay to celebrate Argentina’s flagship grape- MALBEC, that makes up more than half of Argentina’s wine exports!

Did you know Canada is the third largest market in the world for Malbec Argentino? We love it, and for good reason!

Although Malbec originated in Bordeaux and Cahors, where it is still widely planted today, it thrives in the unique terroir of high altitudes in Argentina.

The high altitude vineyards along the Andes provide a perfectly dry climate, powerful sunlight, high diurnal temperatures, and a pure, snow-draining water source to the vines here. These conditions are extremely optimal for the Malbec varietal, and results in many organic wines of exceptional quality. These factors are why this amazing wine region supplies 75% of the world's Malbec!

Fun fact: Malbec World Day is celebrated on April 17th since on this day in 1853, the first agricultural school in Argentina was opened with the goal of cultivating French grapes on Argentinian soil.
